Believe

Bethany is a Christian Reformed Church.

We are Christian.  By this we state that we believe Jesus was the Messiah.

He was born of a virgin, in Bethlehem, somewhere around the year zero as all time

has been kept in relationship to his birth.

Jesus lived, did ministry, was crucified, died, and was buried, but rose from

the tomb three days later.

Jesus is the eternal Son of God.

God is one being and three persons; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

We cannot explain all this but we believe it to be true.

We are Reformed,

and saying that, we acknowledge this designation means different things to different generations.

For us, being reformed means we trace our Biblical heritage to the branch of the reformation that

followed the teachings of John Calvin, John Knox, and others in their tradition.

We hold to the three ecumenical creeds;

the Apostles Creed, the Nicene Creed, and the Athanasian Creed,

and three reformed confessions;

the Heidelberg Catechism, the Canons of Dort, and the Belgic Confession.

In addition to this, we agree with the teachings of Abraham Kuyper

that there is not one square inch on this earth about

which God does not say, “this is mine.”

Believing this, we believe we are called to “transform the culture” around us,

bringing shalom to every sphere of life as we live to bring the Kingdom of God.

We are a church.

By this we mean that we are a body of believers who gather together and do life together

with the desire that by the way we do that, we carry out the mandate of Scripture

found in Micah 6:8, “to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with our God".
